Woods
Woods are long-distance clubs designed to drive the ball a great distance down the fairway towards the hole. For maximum club speed, woods generally have a large head and a long shaft. Originally woods were made from Persimmon wood. Currently some manufacturers, like Ping, have developed laminated woods. Manufacturers started using steel or titanium in the late 1980s. Recently manufacturers have started using materials like carbon fiber or scandium. Even if 'woods' are not made from wood, but different metals they are still called 'Woods' to identify the general shape and their intended use on the club on the golf course.
